Olivia Rodrigo’s freshman album, “Sour” broke records, altered brain chemistry, and after two years, continues to top charts. After her three-year hiatus, Olivia is back with her pop-rock sophomore album, “GUTS.”
She’d been teasing the album with an Instagram story featuring a calendar with a heart drawn on June 30, 2023, and a color scheme of vibrant red with a white background. It was later found out that this would be the date of release for her single “Vampire,” which became an instant hit with over 500 million listens. The single beat out the rest of her songs and continues to be her most listened-to song.
The melancholy pop single “Vampire” was then followed by the more 2000s pop-rock single, “Bad, idea right?” released on Aug. 11, 2023. These consequent singles put Rodrigo’s album in the spotlight mostly because of their different styles and unpredictability. Though Rodrigo is known for the diversity of genres in her albums, she still confused many listeners by juxtaposing her two singles.
Once the album was released and the crowds bought the vinyl, not only was the entire album more pop-punk than what was initially believed, but there were hidden songs in each vinyl. Depending on the color of the vinyl, one of the hidden songs will be found. There was also an intentional glitch in one of her videos, which when paused at the perfect time, showed the four hidden tracks. All of these tracks are considered unreleased and are only on music streaming services, such as Spotify, as podcasts put up by fans.
She has already announced a world tour for “GUTS” and a flyer for the event, shown below. Rodrigo will be in Philadelphia at the Wells Fargo Center on July 19, 2023. She will also perform in New York at Madison Square Garden on April 5 and on April 6.
Rodrigo has also released a new single for the upcoming film,” The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” a prequel to the popular “Hunger Games” franchise. The single was released on Nov 3, 2023, by the name of ”Can’t Catch Me Now.” The song depicts the character of Lucy Gray and how she haunts Coriolanus Snow who later becomes President Snow in “The Hunger Games.” The song has a beautiful haunting quality and lyrics that represent Lucy Gray perfectly. It has already become popular and has helped advertise the upcoming film which will be in theaters on, Nov. 13, 2023.
Olivia Rodrigo has a large following and immense talent. With the release of “GUTS,” she has beat the pattern of mediocre sophomore albums and has cemented her name in the music industry with a deeper imprint.
