With the end of Hispanic Heritage Month, let this be the Wilson Wire’s shout-out to Wilson’s own Latin Pride club. Calling any Latino or curious students interested in learning more about Latino culture, the Latin Pride Club is up and running again this year!
This club focuses on appreciating the diversity of Latino culture. It is for students interested in learning about Latin American culture through film, music, and discussion, with the addition of field trips and hands-on experiences.
Anyone is welcome to join, whether you are of Latino descent or not. Diversity is celebrated since it shows a higher population of students who wish to learn about other cultures. Their members have Colombian, Dominican, and Mexican heritage, but they’d love to have more diversity in the group. The members often talk about their own cultures and customs and share anything relevant to the weekly topics set by the members themselves.
Latin Pride Club has had many field trips in the past and is planning to have more field trips as well as fundraisers this year. They also have scholarship opportunities for seniors and anyone interested.
The club has taken part in coordinating events such as a Zumba class, bingo nights, and movie nights. The Zumba classes took place in the lower house and included Latino music. These were also led and taught by professional Zumba coaches.
They are currently working on selling empanadas to raise funds for their upcoming field trips. These empanadas can be ordered through [email protected]. According to Deyalis Sanchez, the empanadas are being sold in pairs for $3 and single for $2.
Anyone interested can join their Remind with the code @gekb77f or contact [email protected] and [email protected]. The club meets on Tuesdays. Their meeting rooms change but are updated through email.
