“Over 20 years ago, my friend (and former Wilson teacher), Mike Fitzgerald, lost his daughter to complications related to a brain tumor. Somehow, in the face of tragedy, he and his family created something beautiful and heroic in her honor: Lauren’s Foundation.” From their website (laurensfoundation.org), you can find out more information about Lauren, the foundation, and how to get involved.
In Sept. of 2024, I chose to interview Mrs. Dennes, the AP English Language & CP 10 teacher at Wilson High School, about her role and participation as a member of the board of directors for Lauren’s Foundation. In addition, she discussed events that students can volunteer or show up to that may pique their interests.
- “Thank you again for agreeing to this interview; I greatly appreciate it. For reference, what is Lauren’s Foundation and what made you decide to join?”
“This is my 15th year teaching at Wilson, and I started to participate in Lauren’s Foundation fundraisers fairly early in my career. Once I met Mike and heard about his story and the foundation, I was inspired by the impact he was having on the community, and I started helping out at their annual 5k.” - “What is your contribution towards Lauren’s Foundation?”
A few years ago, I became an official member of the board of directors for the organization; I’m the Scholarship Director. I’m proud to be on the board of directors for this non-profit organization that honors Lauren Fitzgerald’s memory by recognizing, supporting, and celebrating local individuals and families who persevere despite significant adverse life circumstances.” - “What issue does Lauren’s Foundation solve?”
“The foundation continually provides financial assistance to local families with seriously ill children, raises money for brain tumor research, informs the public of the importance of being an organ donor, gives scholarships to support high school seniors who have faced hardships, and raises money for and donates to The Opportunity House. In the past 20 years, Lauren’s Foundation has invested over $400,000 in this community through charitable funds.” - “What are some upcoming events you may have?”
“We have the 20th Anniversary of Fitzy’s 5k at the West Reading Playground on Sunday, October 27th!” - “What is the most important thing you’ve learned during your time at Lauren’s Foundation?”
“Throughout my involvement with the foundation, I’ve been able to witness firsthand how much of an impact seemingly insignificant actions and seemingly insignificant donations have. Volunteering for an hour or two, donating a few dollars… it might not seem like much, but it is. When many of us are giving what we can, it all adds up. We’re helping parents with sick children and hefty medical bills pay their mortgages. We’re helping college freshmen pay for their books and supplies. We’re encouraging people to become organ donors. We’re changing lives for the better.” - “Do you have any extra information you’d like to share?”
“Lauren’s birthday was on Halloween, and the annual Halloween Run/Walk is our most impactful fundraiser of the year. I enjoy volunteering and walking alongside Mike and his family, community members, as well as current and former students while working towards such meaningful causes.”
Thank you, Mrs. Dennes, for agreeing to do an interview covering Lauren’s Foundation. It was a pleasure receiving the opportunity to understand the depth of this organization.
