On May 13th, 2024, several of Wilson’s spring sports teams brought home a county championship this year. These teams include boys baseball, and both girls and boys lacrosse. Boys tennis also won the county championship, they claimed their title at the end of last April. The boys tennis team has now won back to back BCIAA County Championships. They advanced to the Semi Finals where they beat Daniel Boone and then went on to defeat Conrad Wieser with a score of 3-2. After Counties, they went on to districts with their first game being played at Dallastown. Their final regular season record was 12-2.
Wilson’s baseball team has had a fairly good season with their record being 16-6. They finished their regular season as first in the Berks County 1 Conference and were the third seed going into county playoffs. After defeating Twin Valley, they progressed to the county championship where they defeated Governor Mifflin with a score of 10-3. Some key players in this game include Tommy and Christo Hunsicker, Cooper Kennedy, Ryan Marmalejos, Jack Gabel, Nick Florini, Nick Herron, and Matt VanOstenbridge. They will continue to have their final few games throughout the month of May. This is the baseball team’s first BCIAA championship since 2019. When asked about the win and the team’s growth over the season, Nick Florini stated “I would say that the team has grown tremendously over the season, at the beginning of the season we were kind of all new to each other, and hadn’t really played with anyone. Throughout the year we built on our similarities and battled through our differences. All in all we’ve gained a ton of chemistry and we have bonded so much allowing us to come together and win a championship.” The Senior Captain also mentioned how determination plays a key factor in achieving success. “Our team is a bunch of hard working and determined players who won’t give up when faced with adversity. We went down early in the championship game and never folded, we battled back and came out on top.” Boy’s baseball is coached by Bill Underwood and assisted by Adam Smith and Michael Zientek.
Boys lacrosse has had an outstanding season being undefeated in the Berks-Inter County Conference and their overall season record being 18-2. They defeated the Twin Valley Raiders at Albright College on Monday, May 13th. Senior Captain Jonah Pertet explained how it was important for the team to come together before they could achieve their ultimate goal. He stated, “Throughout the season, our team has grown so close together and our chemistry has improved all around the board. We all understand everyone’s strength, so we put that together to the team we have today.” Pertet believes that their game against Emmaus back in March was a key turning point in their growth as a team. That particular game went into double overtime and still came out victorious. He also stressed how important consistency was to the team’s success. “Our coaches make sure that we are always consistent in our practices and continue to focus on our fundamental skills.” One last important point Jonah made involved how grateful he was that their team was able to achieve this. “I would like to thank God for allowing us to get to the championship and the coaches for making a great game plan for us.”, he states. Wilson’s boy’s lacrosse team is led by head coach Ryan Sheaffer.
Both the girl’s and boy’s lacrosse defeated twin valley to claim the championship. This is the girl’s lacrosse team’s first county championship since 2018. They went into counties as the number one seed with their final regular season record being 15-3. Senior Alexa Kairis stated “I think the key factor was the motivation and passion we had to win this game. For seniors especially, we hadn’t gotten a county championship under our belts for all of our high school lacrosse career. We wanted this win so bad and I think those passionate feelings ultimately helped us carry through till the end.”
Many of these teams will go on to compete in districts and hopefully be successful in their final games of the postseason.
