Are you hearing and seeing all the hype for the movie Wicked: For Good, but you don’t know if you should spend the money for a ticket to watch? Well, here I am to let you know that you should definitely get that ticket and go.
If you’re going to go watch this amazing movie, you need to know the gist of the first one. Well, here it is:
The summary of Wicked is that it tells an amazing and powerful origin story of how the Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba) meets Miss Perfect, Glinda (Glinda the Good Witch). It shows a powerful focus on the unlikely friendship between the flawed, confident girl with green skin named Elphaba and the popular blonde Glinda at Shiz University, in The Land of Oz.
They clash at first and LOATH each other, but they bond over shared experiences. Nearing the end of the movie, Madame Morrible, the University’s head sorcerer, explains to the Wizard of Oz that Elphaba has the power to read the Grimerie. Elphaba thought her whole life that the Wizard could help her with her green skin because she got bullied for it and didn’t have a good childhood. Eventually, we find out that the Wizard has been lying and has no power. A distressed Elphaba, who has been lied to her whole life, goes on the run to another part of the castle. Her new best friend, Glinda, finds her. Elphaba tries to persuade Glinda to go with her and fly away now that she has even more power than before, but Glinda hesitates and doesn’t go.
She gets Elphaba her cape, and the guards find them. They break in and try to get the witch, but she defies gravity and takes off into the forest, now becoming a fugitive and banned from Oz. It ends with Elphaba officially being known as the Wicked Witch of the West.
The heartbreaking truth of the Wizard’s lies continues into the next movie, which some of my peers and I have watched, loved, and had some opinions on. Here are a few reviews of the Wicked: For Good movie after watching it.
Isabella Guzman, an 11th grader at Wilson, states that:
“This movie was very touching and showed the power of friendship. There was a nice addition of romance, which made the movie more interesting.”
With her honest review, she rates it 5/5 stars.
Albree Stefanik, another 11th grader at Wilson, says:
“It was good, but I think it could use some more detail. I think it was too sad lol.”
With her review, she rates it 3/5 stars
Ella Yetter, yet another 11th grader at Wilson, states:
“Wicked: For Good, is an amazing movie about the Act 2 Broadway version of Wicked. Ariana Grande, I think, is a great fit for Glinda, showing the emotion of hurt and joy she felt throughout the movie, while Cynthia Erivo shows the pain Elphaba feels while losing people and trying to save Oz from the wizard.”
5/5 stars,
With another review, we found the best person to review this movie. Wilson High School’s own Theater teacher, Mrs. Lennon. She has said:
“The rating for me would be 3/5 stars, because the things I liked about it are the things I liked about part 1. I think it was too much CGI and a bit too long. Some of the characters didn’t sing as well as I wanted them to or expected them to. And even though Cynthia and Ariana did well with the new songs, I didn’t think they were necessary. Overall, I thought the movie parts 1 and 2 were fine, but both of them could’ve used editing. But I hope they keep making musical movies!”
Olive Bowers, a 9th grader at our high school, has rated ⅘ for this movie. She said:
“I thought this was so good! I thought they did a great job putting Act 2 from the stage musical into a movie. The 2 songs they added fit so well, and I thought they added another level of depth to the characters. I loved all of the costumes and makeup. I thought they could have used a little less CGI. Also, I thought they didn’t cast the right Madame Morrible, but otherwise it was amazing. I loved it.”
Riley Davis, another 9th grader in our high school, has rated this movie 4.5/5 stars. She has said:
“This movie overall was very good, but there were definitely some things that just didn’t look the best. I think they should’ve gotten a different Madame Morrible who maybe would’ve done a bit better, but overall it was ok. Then also, when you compare Wicked: For Good to Wicked Part 1, it seems like they put a little less work into dressings/clothes, and, overall, maybe pieces of the whole set. I liked all the newer songs that they added, and overall they truly did do well, but I think maybe they could’ve done a little better or added some things to make it a bit different.”
So as you can see, there are many different opinions about how they feel about the movie, but they are giving their honest opinion, which is the best for rating movies. Some liked it, and some didn’t, but for all of their own valid and honest opinions.
Ultimately, the green makeup and the flying bubbles are secondary to the film. The most meaningful part of the story is a long, heartbreaking, but also heartfelt friendship story that has a deeper meaning than we know. Wicked: For Good reminds us that time is too short in some cases; time is fleeting. Let’s spend it well with the people we love and care deeply about before it’s too late.
Wicked: For Good, after I had watched it, gave me a deeper sense of meaning towards my relationships with my friends than I already had: how much they mean to me and how much they truly help me through life problems. It does make me wonder, where would I be without them, truly?
So, that’s why I say you should go get those tickets and watch this movie. It will open your eyes and have you looking at things in a different light.
