It has been over a decade since Wilson High School has had a Homecoming Dance. With low demand and attendance for the event, Wilson decided it was worth more to keep the money spent on the dance and put it into other activities that students might enjoy, such as fairs. However, in 2022, Wilson sent out a Google form asking students what big event they would like to see Wilson put on this year. The numbers skyrocketed in favor of the dance, bringing back this activity for the 2023-2024 school year.
To kick off the homecoming week, we had themes and “PAWoints” given out for school spirit. It allowed students to dress up with their friends to participate in various themes and get involved with the school. We had Country vs Country Club Day, Barbie Day, and USA Day! Most, if not all, teachers participated with the kids in Spirit Week, making it more enjoyable. Also, if you got three or more PAWoints during homecoming week, you got an ice cream party!
On October 11th, 2023, Mini-THON had a fundraiser at Duncan’s Corn Maze to raise money for the kids and give Wilson students an opportunity to have fun and enjoy Homecoming Week outside of school. They had a corn maze, pumpkin slingshots, a tractor ride and a corn box! And to stay warm, they had a bonfire and fire pits to roast marshmallows, hotdogs, etc. so you could have a treat and spend quality time with friends and family. Thank Mini-Thon for the fun event!!
On Friday the 13th, Wilson not only had their Pink Out-themed football game but the Powder Puff Game as well. The Powder Puff Game is a flag football game between seniors and junior girls. They wear two different colored shirts and decide who the winner will be. (Most of the time, if not all the time, it’s the seniors).
This year, Wilson Senior Alexa Kairis and Emmi McLain were the MVPs on offense. With Kairis’ first touchdown of the game, and McLain’s consistent field goals and touchdowns, the seniors flew by the juniors. And the MVPs on defense for the Seniors were Natalie Kairis and Riley Krick. Natalie Kairis intercepted the ball twice, running both back for touchdowns, and Krick gave the juniors some serious trouble with her big blocks. MVPs on Offense for the Juniors were Caroline Horace and Ava Ortiz. Both had an extreme amount of yards against the senior defense, and Horace scored a touchdown. The defense MVP was Angelina Rodriguez with many blocks. The seniors won the big game 34-16. Congrats to the seniors!
Every Wilson High School student knows about the pinkout game. It is a staple for not only the football team but the community as well. Mini-THON, Student Government, and numerous clubs come out and raise money for the fight against breast cancer. The football team made the night with a final score of 24-6 against their opponent, Penn Manor. MVPs of the Penn Manor Game were Tommy Hunsicker and Jonah Pertet. The Bulldogs are now 7-2 and 5-0 in their division. During halftime, our homecoming court was honored, announcing Caitlin Tricket for Homecoming Queen and Edison Case for Homecoming King!
The Homecoming Dance took place on Saturday, October 14th. People lined up outside in semi-formal attire, ready to enter the Lower House cafeteria. There were snacks and drinks prepared for students in addition to a photo booth and a giant HOCO sign inside the event for people to get pictures at. Songs like “Cotton Eye Joe” and “Dior” made the night lively and exciting for all attendees. Overall, the dance was enjoyable, and we owe a big thank you Mr. Marquez for a wonderful night!
Across the board, the 2023 homecoming week was a success. Multiple events took place showing the community how much love Wilson has for its students. Thank you to all the principals who helped design this week-long adventure, along with Mrs. Marconi, Student Government, and Mini-THON, and all of the Wilson teachers for supervising events this year. And to all the students who participated in a homecoming event, Wilson hoped you enjoyed it, and we can not wait to see what happens next year!
