As the weather gets nicer, we have much more to look forward to than just sunny days. Many of Wilson’s spring sports kicked off on March 4. From baseball tryouts to lacrosse practices, all our athletes are getting ready for the season. Fans, players, and coaches are enthusiastic about beginning games, tournaments, and meets as we start moving towards warmer weather and out of the winter months. Although many of these activities must be practiced on the field, a lot of team cooperation and hard work is done off the field to ensure a victory for the Bulldogs.
Spring training began for our boys’ baseball and girls’ softball teams on March 14, as the Bulldogs left for Myrtle Beach. While there, they enjoyed the beautiful weather, team bonding, and preparing for the upcoming season. As they return from training, our boys’ baseball teams will be facing off against the Boyertown Bears on March 20. Our girls’ softball teams also had a great time in the sunshine down at Myrtle Beach. After a few games during spring training, varsity’s first home game is scheduled for March 20 against Kutztown.
Wilson’s lacrosse teams have recently started practice to prepare for the upcoming season. Senior girls’ lacrosse player Alexa Kairis stated, “I am very excited to play with my team and grow with a new group of coaches.” The team is looking forward to another successful season and is extremely thankful for all their fans. Kairis stated that she believes a good teammate is one who does “anything and everything to make sure everyone feels welcome on the field.” In these types of sports, it is clear a team dynamic is very important. Events the team is looking forward to include their scrimmage on March 11 and their first game, Owen J. Roberts. Our boys’ lacrosse team will begin their season on March 21 in their game against Garnet Valley.
Another sport that began was track and field. They have started practices and are preparing for the highly anticipated county meet that will take place later in the season. Senior boys’ track and field athlete Elijah Stoudt stated he is excited to practice every day and grow stronger with the people around him. He stated that a good teammate to him “is someone who supports you and keeps you accountable.” Gia Jacobs is another outstanding athlete who participates in running events and pole vault. She states, “A good teammate is someone who encourages their team and works to help them improve.” Positivity plays a big role in a team dynamic. When someone on the team is positive it boosts everyone’s morale and can lead to success. Our track and field athletes are most excited to compete in the team’s home meet against Leonard Stephen.
Team culture is another important element of a successful team dynamic. Boys’ volleyball player Hayden Llenado states that he is excited to see the team culture develop throughout the season. Another important remark the senior volleyball player made was that being coachable was an extremely important component of being a good teammate. “It’s important to be able to take criticism and learn from them [mistakes],” he states. Overall our boys’ volleyball team is excited to start their season.
So much hard work happens to allow Wilson to have a successful athletic program. Make sure to come out and support all our athletes as they kick off their spring sports seasons!
