Tournament Overview
Starting tomorrow, and all the way through February 20, four NHL nations will face-off in sets of tournament games. These games will be played in a traditional Round Robin format, where each team plays against every other. The two teams with the best tournament record will advance to the one-game final. Four of these games will be held in Montreal, Quebec, while three (including the final) will take place in Boston, Massachusetts. The participating nations include the USA, Canada, Sweden, and Finland. Each team will consist of thirteen forwards, seven defensemen, and three goalies. This event replaces the All-Star skills event that ran during the break in the past, but will return in 2026.

Players to Watch
While Team USA has a mixing pot of skills and scorers, so do the other teams. Team Canada’s alternative captain is Connor McDavid (Edmonton Oilers) who had 123 points in the 2023-24 season. His speed and agility can also assist Canada, as he won first place in the All-Star speed skate competition four times. Team Sweden has William Nylander (Toronto Maple Leafs) who scored 80 points in 2023-24, he’s known for his creativity in scoring. He also mentioned in an interview that he and Maple Leafs teammate/Team USA captain, Auston Matthews, may “drop the gloves” when they compete. Team Finland has Patrik Laine (Columbus Blue Jackets) who only scored 64 points in 2023-24 but he is known for having a very powerful shot, this can aid in facing strong goalies.
NHL Season Impact
As this tournament takes place mid-season, there could be a significant impact on players and their teams. Since participating players aren’t taking a break like the rest of the league, they could have less stamina when the season resumes. Especially if they make it to the final. For instance, players like Jack Hughes (New Jersey Devils) and Jack Eichel (Vegas Golden Knights) are leading their teams in points. The regular season resumes two days after the tournament so it doesn’t give tons of time for guys like them to fully recover. There are also injuries to take into account. The rules are the same in this tournament as every other NHL game, so checking is 100% allowed. Any of these star-players having to be out for weeks post-tournament, can contribute to where they end in the playoffs.
Fan Engagement
The games between the four nations can be viewed on streaming services such as ESPN+ and NHL Network. As well as on channels like TNT and ABC. Not only can fans watch from home, but they can also attend these events in person at Bell Centre and TD Garden. Before games on February 15 and 17 these areas will also be holding fan festivals at Windsor Station and Boston City Hall Plaza. The NHL and each team will be posting updates and behind-the-scenes content on TikTok, Instagram, and X.
